Meet Our Franchisees
Samantha Heynes, Stratford-upon-Avon
For Samantha, joining the Affinity Associates franchise was the culmination of an eight-year relationship built on trust, flexibility, and mutual support through some of life’s most challenging moments.
Samantha’s journey has been one full of ups and downs, with more than her fair share of challenges to overcome, which only makes it all the more remarkable that she has entrusted the next chapter of her life to a partnership with Affinity.
Starting her career in Cape Town running the accounts for a modelling agency, she later worked for one of the city’s longest-established architectural practices during the redevelopment of Cape Town’s waterfront in the 1990s. After relocating to England in 1994, she settled on her husband’s family farm in Warwickshire, where she began her entrepreneurial journey in earnest.
In 1996, the family rescued the Reliant Motor Company from receivership, a turnaround that was featured in the BAFTA-winning BBC series “Trouble at Top” with Bill Grist. The family went on to become original equipment importers for French microcar manufacturer, running the operation from 1999 through to 2013 whilst simultaneously managing the family farm and a property portfolio.
“I was running five businesses at one point,” Samantha recalls. “And going back to night school to get UK qualifications because what I had from South Africa wouldn’t allow me to have a practice license here.”
A Fresh Start
A pretty stellar career, and some serious dedication and ambition! Unfortunately, life had other ideas, and, in late 2013, a number of serious crises in her personal and family life derailed Samantha’s plans, forcing her to completely rethink her direction. “My world was absolutely shattered and my confidence was rock bottom,” she shared. “I went from hero to zero, lost a lot of friends who I thought were friends, and it was quite isolating.”
Looking for a fresh start which would take her back to her roots as an accountant and entrepreneur, she joined the Cloud Bookkeeping franchise, recognising how the business framework and structured support of a franchise could help her rebuild during a vulnerable time. Unfortunately, the franchise disbanded just a few years later, but Samantha retained the Cloud Bookkeeping name and continued building her practice. By 2015, she had moved into offices in the Stratford Playhouse theatre building in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon, where she’s remained for a decade. The practice grew to serve around 60 VAT-registered limited companies, developing particular niches in theatre production accounts and providing outsourced accounting departments for businesses across various sectors.
When life changes everything
That someone was Affinity Associates. What began as outsourcing year-end accounts and self-assessments evolved into a deep working relationship. Affinity’s back-office team took on payroll, CIS, and day-to-day bookkeeping work, essentially becoming an extension of Samantha’s UK-based team. This not only provided some much needed lifting of pressure on Samantha’s schedule, but also allowed her to slowly but surely expand her business’ offerings. Most importantly, however, it was also to become a partnership built on trust and support, at both a personal and professional level.
“We all became pretty close to everyone we worked with at Affinity.” Samantha explains. “We treat them like they’re part of our team. My client managers and I remain the face of the business, but Affinity provides crucial back-office support. The service they provide is brilliant.”
This flexibility and support proved invaluable when Samantha’s husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2024 “I’m going into the office less and less because he can no longer drive and has a lot of hospital appointments,” she explains. “I needed a scenario that is flexible. The fact that if there’s extra work, we can dial up the back office requirements, dial it down, all depending on demand from our clients.”
This scalability offered something Samantha couldn’t achieve alone: “You wouldn’t be able to do that if you just had a team of 20, 30, 100 people on contract. That’s something you’re only going to get by being part of something bigger.”
Coming Full Circle
When Affinity Associates decided to franchise early in 2025, the opportunity felt like a natural progression for Samantha and her team rather than a substantial change. “The one thing I liked about the franchise was that it was a business in a box. It was a structure and it was a support package. Perhaps, most importantly, Affinity has really embraced modern technology in a way that is accessible and relevant to both my business, and to my clients. Cloud based accountancy was already coming in during my previous franchise, but now it’s coupled with a level of expertise and experience which really makes a difference. They’ve always bent over backwards to help me.”
The parallels to her original Cloud Bookkeeping franchise weren’t lost on her. Once again, she was seeking structure and support—but this time from a position of experience rather than vulnerability. “The one thing I liked about the franchise was that it was a business in a box. It was a structure and it was a support package.”
The best of both worlds
For Samantha, joining the Affinity franchise is much an evolution rather than a revolution. Her practice continues to offer what she calls “the personal touch”.
Clients aren’t just numbers, they get to speak to real people, and they know that someone will always be there at the other end of the phone when they need them.
The difference now is that she is able to offer so much more. “We still offer the personal touch with the support of a larger accountancy practice that offers a far wider range of services,” she explains. “It’s the best of both worlds: a local practice with people clients know and trust, backed by the expertise and resources of a national and international brand. I’m really excited about the future, because now it feels like we can only grow from strength to strength.”
After all, Samantha has spent her career building businesses. Now, with the Affinity Associates franchise, she’s building something that can endure whatever life throws at her next.
